Bredonborough.
Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!
Moving a jade plant in a large pot at World HQ this morning, although with care – slip. There it was, there it went. The back.
Not enough to prevent a pitiful hobble to Bredonborough Abbey for a performance by a local sinfonietta. A wonderful event: live performance in a superb environment, well attended by locals; the quality of the event not entirely reflected in the quality of playing, which seemed almost beside the point. Up close to the orchestra provided an opportunity to see the how, of functional operating in a large ensemble; my familiarity is with the multiple problems of small ensemble work.
More books, another shelf…
… in the England section of the home study. Jeremy Paxman’s The Political Animal, informative, terrifying, an entertaining read, with too many points of contact to the music industry to be comfortable, is now read; so I am able to accept an invitation to tea with Mary Pearce & discuss it. Mary has been listening to the reading-book version. Peter Vansittart’s In Memory Of England: mostly read in coffeeshops near the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo when Crim were Crimsonising there, earlier this decade. An informative, informed, well-honed hoot of Englishness.
When recently visiting the post-mature Bredonborough lady who repairs my elderly volumes, she asked if I knew of a book written by her niece, Juliet Nicholson: The Perfect Summer? Of course! I read it while in Estonia with the Minx, Churchscaping. This lady is cultured, literary, a discreet philanthropist stemming from her Catholic faith, a member of a prominent local family, with a frequently-visiting daughter who lives in Wimborne, and a bibliotaphist. Any conversation with her is a privilege & a treat, and touches on just about every area of interest in my life. How many people do I know who would be as interested as myself to know that Reginald Pole was a Dean of Wimborne Minster? And that, within 30 yards of our front door.
Further along the shelf is a Valentine card, handmade by Minx Card Manufactory of Bredonborough…
